Helwell Bay, accessible from Watchet Visitor Centre, reveals a dramatic geological story. From the railway crossing at Goviers Lane, follow the coastal path to Helwell Bay car park, then descend the concrete steps to the beach. These steps mark the Watchet Fault, showcasing contrasting Triassic red Mercia Mudstones and Jurassic grey Helwell Marls, where early ammonite fossils are found. During holidays, the Visitor Centre and Geckoella offer guided fossil walks, providing geological insights and fossil hunting opportunities within this historically significant bay.

West Street Beach offers a fascinating coastal experience. This stony expanse, rich with rock pools and fossil discoveries, provides a delightful playground for both humans and their canine companions. The beach’s unique character is further enhanced by the presence of Watchet’s Victorian tidal pool, a charming feature nestled at the foot of the short slipway. This historic pool offers a safe and sheltered swimming environment, contrasting with the wilder, more natural aspects of the surrounding shoreline.
