The Liberty Trail, a 28-mile path connecting Ham Hill in Somerset to Lyme Regis in Dorset, retraces the steps of rebels from the 1685 Monmouth Rebellion. Based on accounts from six participants, the trail offers a tangible link to this historic uprising. Walkers can traverse the route in six stages: a short 3.5-mile leg from Ham Hill to West Chinnock, followed by a 5-mile stretch to Misterton, then 4 miles to Wayford. The journey continues with 6 miles to Thorncombe, 5.5 miles to Wootton Fitzpaine, and concludes with a 4-mile descent to Lyme Regis. This itinerary allows hikers to experience the landscapes and villages that witnessed the rebels’ journey, as they rallied in support of the Duke of Monmouth.
